You are quietly sipping your coffee or a good Belgian beer (cliché but admitted) when suddenly, you feel this irrepressible call of the forest, of the rocks and the paths that go up... and down... and up again.

Good news: Wallonia is a goldmine for hikers , whether you're a beginner or already have calves of concrete. Between forests, valleys, rivers and breathtaking panoramas, there's plenty to disconnect for a few hours.

Get out your hiking boots and head out on an adventure. We're sharing our favorite hiking spots in Wallonia , Belgium's famous region, and the best gear to help you get the most out of it. Head to Wallonia with 5 exceptional hikes to discover.

1. Le Rocher du Hérou

📍 Nadrin - Departure: Belvédère du Hérou car park

📅 All year round (avoid in rainy weather)

↔️ 6 km - Elevation gain 277m - Medium to Difficult level

This hike in Hérou is perfect for those who want a mix of dense forest and a sick view of the Ourthe meander . However, we're not starting with the most relaxed walk. Expect some tough climbs and slightly technical trails, but nothing traumatic either. Just look up to forget the effort. For the more adventurous, there's the option of following up with a picnic session with a breathtaking view.

Muule tips: Hiking shoes with a good grip , because slipping on a root makes your friends laugh... but not your knees. A light fleece , to avoid the cold at altitude. And a thermos of hot coffee for the break at the summit, because you deserve it.

Superb panorama of the Ourthe from the Rocher du Hérou.

2. Le Fondy des Chiens

📍 Nismes - Departure: Church of Nismes

📅 Spring to fall

↔️ 4.5 km - Elevation gain 100m - Easy level

If you like unusual landscapes , Le Fondry des Chiens is a must. Shall we set the scene? A 20-meter-deep natural chasm , cliffs whitened by limestone, and some rather creepy local legends. A sort of miniature Grand Canyon , which takes you on a journey without leaving Wallonia. Each turn offers a new perspective, and nature quietly reclaims its rights at the bottom of this unusual crater.

Muule's little tip: Remember to cover your head with a cap or an anti-UV hat , because between the sun and the white rock, it gets really hot. The terrain is dry and stony, so also bring light hiking shoes with good crampons , so as not to dance the samba on the stones. And above all, don't forget your water bottle because water is life.

3. Transardennaise

📍 From La Roche-en-Ardenne to Bouillon

📅 May to September to fully enjoy

↔️ 160 km – 7 stages – Elevation gain 3600 m – Medium to Difficult level

The Transardennaise is the Great Ardennes Crossing (GTA for those in the know). In one week, cover 160 km of marked trails (only in the direction La Roche → Bouillon), through the forests of the Ardennes, the valleys of the Lesse, the Ourthe and the Semois. Considered one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Belgium , the terrain is not very technical and accessible if you have a bit of stamina. No need to be an ultra-trail runner: forest paths, small roads and trails in the middle of fields are on the menu.

Don't want to do it all at once? Try one or two stages ranging from 17 to 26 km , it's very suitable for a weekend .

Little Muule tips: 160 km on foot wears out your shoes. So set off with light and sturdy walking shoes , a 30-40L backpack with a waist belt (your shoulders will thank you) and a waterproof jacket , because the Ardennes love weather surprises. For a 20km stage, no need to bring out the heavy artillery: a small 20L bag is enough.

Breathtaking view of the Belgian Ardennes.

And a little important reminder: bivouacking is prohibited in Belgium , so plan your sleeping arrangements in advance. Don't panic: hostels , lodges and small hotels await you along the route and some even offer luggage transport .

4. Ninglinspo

📍 Aywaille - 30 min from Liège - Departure: Sedoz 5

📅 Spring and fall for colors

↔️ 6 km - Easy to medium

It's THE star of Belgian walks. The Ninglinspo is the only mountain torrent in Belgium (yes, that's right), which winds through a magical gorge between mossy rocks and small waterfalls . You jump from stone to stone, you cross wooden footbridges, and you clearly have the impression of being in a fantasy film set. The path winds along the torrent on wooden footbridges , with the sound of the water cascading over the rocks. A moment of relaxation guaranteed. Perfect for a relaxing outing where you can even take the children (or the grandparents who are starting to drag their feet). A little tip for the muules: leave early in the morning or during the week to avoid the crowds. Because yes, it's a magical spot , but you're not the only ones who know about it.

Muule tip: For this type of wet terrain, opt for hiking shoes with Vibram Megagrip soles to avoid an accidental triple axel. Consider a fleece. or a light jacket even in summer (The cooling effect of the stream is amazing). If you have fragile ankles , take walking poles . And remember to slip a small towel into your bag: ending up with your feet in the water happens more often than you think.

5. Hoëgne Valley

📍 Jalhay - Departure: Parking at Pont de Belleheid

📅 Spring to fall

↔️ 8 km - Blue Cross markings - Medium level

Less well-known than the Ninglinspo, but just as magical: the Hoëgne Valley is a true wild gem . The trail runs alongside a river with wooden bridges , natural pools and an enchanted forest atmosphere . It is one of the most emblematic hikes in Belgium: accessible but sporty enough to really get some exercise, with just the right amount of footbridges and small climbs to spice up the walk. In short, a must for lovers of wild nature and walks that really let you disconnect.

Muule's little tip: Choose water-repellent hiking pants that are resistant to snagging branches to avoid leg injuries. Waterproof hiking shoes are essential for keeping your feet dry. Try a water bottle with a water filter if you plan to sip water from the stream without risking getting sick in the evening.

Ready to put on your shoes and head to Wallonia?

Whether you're a beginner or a budding adventurer , Wallonia is full of trails that will make you want to breathe deeply (and say "wow" every ten minutes).

Before you leave, don't forget:

Good shoes are the basis

Water. Lots of water .

A map or GPS app to avoid ending up in orienteering mode

And above all... your good mood (it weighs nothing and helps on the climbs)

And one last eco-responsible tip: The Ardennes are fragile and precious . We're counting on you to stay on the marked trails, take your rubbish back with you , and avoid picking the pretty, rare flowers you come across.

So, Muules explorers , are you ready to set off on the Walloon trails that smell of the outdoors and freedom?

Come on. Put on your shoes. We'll see you on the trails.
