Mountain trail running: 5 unusual routes near Annecy

If you're tired of the busy trails in Haute-Savoie , good news, we've got you covered.

Because yes, Annecy and its surroundings are full of crazy trails . But admit it: the Tournette and the Semnoz , we love them but it would be nice to change things up a bit.

Come on, let's shake up our habits and go test 5 trails that are a little less well-known but just as great (and far from the crowds too).

1. Mont Trélod - the panoramic spot

📍 Doucy-en-Bauges - approx. 50 min from Annecy

🏃 11 km | 1080 m D+

We love this trail , which offers a 360° view of Mont Blanc and the rest of the Bauges , without the crowds of the classics. The start is from Cul du Bois (promise, that's the real name). After a beautiful climb in the mountain pastures, we tackle a very technical final climb. And there, we take in the sights.

Little Muule tip: it's steep around here, so we're going for a breathable t-shirt. and an ultra-light cap .

2. The Roc des Bœufs - the secret of the Bauges

📍 La Chapelle-Saint-Maurice - 30 min from Annecy

🏃 8 km | 700 m D+

Less well-known than its neighbors, here we offer you a wild trail with a crazy view of Lake Annecy . The climb is steep but the ridges are MAGICAL, with a mix of forest passages and open terrain. An (almost) chilled route , with playful downhill sections, just the way we like it.

Muule's little tip : remember to grab a pair of ultra-comfortable stretch shorts and an ultra-light hydration pack to carry water, supplies, and a windbreaker.

3. Mont Chauffé - hidden pearl of Chablais

📍 La Chapelle d'Abondance - approx. 2 hours from Annecy

🏃 13 km | 850 m D+

Thrills guaranteed here, with a well-maintained trail. Technical and extremely varied. All this in the middle of marmots and chamois (nice neighbors) . It climbs quite a bit through the mountain pastures before tackling a dizzying ridge , with passages where you have to use your hands (and not get too dizzy). For seasoned trail runners looking for adrenaline.

Muule's little tips : bringultra-light poles to make the climb safer. And a good pair of technical socks to avoid blisters on the descent.

4️. Le Grand Croisse Baulet - top trail between forest and ridges

📍 Sallanches - 1 hour from Annecy

🏃 13 km - 1,050 m D+

A mix of forest, mountain pastures, and ridges with a view of Mont Blanc, no less. To reach the summit, we recommend one of the lesser-known routes . A good alternative to enjoy a crazy setting without too many people. A well-balanced route, with rolling sections and others more punchy.

Little Muule tip : a Leggings or stretch pants to stay warm AND comfortable. A multifunctional headband to protect your little one's neck from the wind on the ridges.

5️. Mont de Grange - a small wild challenge

📍 Abondance - 1 hour from Annecy

🏃 12 km - 1,100 m D+

A pure , 100% wild spot. Just you, the mountain and a few ibex. Because yes, in terms of flora and fauna, we are really at the top here. A nature reserve with one of the most stylish panoramas in Haute-Savoie, you said?! What is certain is that the view is worth it and you have to prepare your legs. All that's left is to choose your route .

Muule's little tips : we recommend you get a competitive trail jacket . And a good headlamp. in case the race drags on a bit (no, no, we don't doubt your performance).
