How to choose Baselayer?
Whether you are experienced traileur, occasional hiker or seasoned skier, you have certainly heard of the famous baselay.
We tell you more about this slightly technical word. We especially help you choose the best first layer according to your practice.
What is it exactly?
Baselay it, or first layer, is a key element of the famous technique of the "3 -layer system". Placed directly on the skin, it serves as technical underwear To regulate your body temperature while evacuating the humidity generated by perspiration.
There are generally two main categories of Baselayers:
- THE Baselayers, such as the under jersey or the Thermal underlay with short or long sleeves.
- THE Baselayers stockings, kind sticky Or Thermal sub-pantalon (long or ¾) to keep your legs warm in winter.
Why is it so important?
Wearing a good baselayer allows:
- To adapt to your efforts : Whether you are in full effort or when you stop, thermal regulation is optimal.
- Stay dry : a quality baselayer evacuates perspiration and dries quickly.
- To prevent irritation : Southern designed models limit friction.
What criteria to choose your first layer?
The choice will depend on your personal activities and preferences.
1. The material
Here are the most common options:
- Merino wool : antibacterial, and breathable, it is worn both in winter and summer. Choose the grammage depending on the season and the activity practiced (from 100 to 300g/m²). His plus? It limits bad odors.
- Castor fiber : Even more robust and softer than merino, it offers improved breathability and a larger moisture transfer.
- Synthetic fibers : mainly in polyamide. Light, quick to dry, at affordable prices.
2. The type of activity
Choose your technical underlay according to the outdoor sport practiced:
- For occasional uses and day (running, trail…): A synthetic fiber baselayer will be perfectly suited to stay comfortable and dry.
- For a regular use and/or over several days in a row (hike, bivouac, bike…): Opt for a natural material (Merinos or Ricin).
- For a intense effort : favor a first layer very light ensuring good breathability.
- For winter activities (Ski, snowshoes…): A thermal underlay thicker will be necessary to keep heat.
Note that an effective baselayer must be close to the body To maximize its performance. Prefer models that fit your shapes For great freedom of movement.
Some models even use the technology of " Body Mapping ", Allowing to adapt to each area of the body, for even more comfort.
