How to choose the right outdoor equipment?
Whether you are going hiking, bivouacking, cycling or skiing, choosing the right equipment is essential to combine comfort, safety and performance. Here are some tips to help you select the equipment that is right for your needs.
1. Choosing a backpack: capacity and ergonomics
A good backpack should be comfortable and suitable for the length of your outing. For a day hike, a 15 to 30 L bag is sufficient, while for a multi-day trek, a 50 L or more model is recommended. Choose bags with a ventilated back for excellent breathability and ergonomic shoulder straps for optimal comfort. Hip stabilizers are also essential to lighten the load and protect your shoulders.
For activities that require regular hydration, such as trail running or long hikes, opt for bags or vests equipped with a water reservoir compartment. These models allow you to stay hydrated quickly while keeping your hands free. For short distances, a hydration vest with a capacity of 2 to 5 liters may be sufficient. For long distances, opt for a bag with a capacity of 5 to 12 liters , which can also carry food, a change of clothes, and a first aid kit .
2. Bivouac equipment: tent, mattress and sleeping bag
Quality sleep is essential to fully enjoy your outdoor adventures. To do this, choose a lightweight and compact tent that is suited to your needs: three-season tents are suitable for spring, summer and autumn, while four-season tents offer optimal protection against harsh winters.
For comfort, choose a suitable mattress :
- Foam : Lightweight and durable, provides basic insulation at an affordable price.
- Inflatable : guarantees better comfort and better insulation.
- Self-inflating : combines the benefits of foam and inflatable for a perfect balance between practicality and comfort.
Complete your equipment with a sleeping bag that is suitable for the season. If the temperatures do not drop below zero, opt for a lightweight and breathable sleeping bag that will prevent you from getting too hot during the night. Conversely, for negative temperatures, choose a model made of natural down that offers excellent thermal insulation . For particularly cold nights, consider adding a sleeping bag: a practical accessory that allows you to gain precious degrees and increase your comfort.
3. Outdoor cooking: eating well even in the great outdoors
To prepare your meals outdoors, opt for a compact gas stove , a lightweight cooking pot , stainless steel cutlery and collapsible silicone bowls . Also consider dehydrated meals, purees, energy bars, gels and energy gums for a quick energy boost during your efforts.
4. Cycling essentials: helmets and bags
When it comes to cycling, safety is paramount. Opt for a lightweight and comfortable bike helmet to protect your head. Complete your equipment with practical bike bags , ideal for carrying your essentials without bulk. They keep your belongings safe while keeping your hands free for optimal riding.
5. Ski equipment: essential equipment for the snow
Whether you're cross-country skiing or ski touring , a ski helmet is essential to protect your head during your mountain outings. For perfect visibility, opt for ski goggles that offer UV protection and anti-fog treatment. For cross-country skiing , choose skis that are suited to the conditions and your level for optimal glide. For ski touring , find a good balance according to your fitness level and skiing style. Lightweight skis reduce fatigue during climbs, but may be less efficient on fast descents. Finally, for snowy terrain, versatile snowshoes adapt to different types of terrain and snow conditions. They are ideal for easy and stable walking.
